In the last edition of Smart Tips, we told you how to trim a door and end up with a clean edge. Once trimmed, what if the door is hollow as many are today?

After  you trim the door, clamp a board to either side of the door near the trimmed edge.  Use expanding foam such as Great Stuff to fill in the bottom.  Once it sets and dries, remove the boards and trim away the excess foam.  Now you’re good to go!

Is a new roof on your list of improvements this year?

The best time to replace roofing shingles is early in the summer months.  The sun's heat will help soften the shingles and the tar that holds them together thereby allowing for a better installation.

And while you’re at it, give some serious thought to replacing your gutters and downspouts.  More than likely, the last time they were upgraded was when the last layer of roofing shingles was installed.  If that’s the case, they are due to be changed.

By the way, maximum number of layers of shingles  allowed is two.
