After making drywall or plaster repairs, instead of using sand paper to smooth the repair material, try using a damp (not wet) sponge. Rinse frequently and apply pressure evenly to the surface being worked. This method cuts way down on dust.

If you got latex paint on fabric, like carpet or upholstery, it's always best to attempt a clean up while the pint is still wet. If the paint has already dried, try this: scrape the excess, dried paint using your fingernail. Then use water mixed with a mild dish washing detergent (no bleaches or alkalis) and blot the stain until it is removed. The worst thing you can do is rub the stain, it will only help the stain set deeper into the fabrics.

To reduce the risk of carbon-monoxide poisoning, install a carbon-monoxide detector around sleeping areas, halls and other living areas. Keep detectors at least 15' away from any appliances that use natural gas or other combustible materials. (Carbon-monoxide detectors are installed in the same manner as smoke detectors.)
With the holiday season upon us, as tempting as it may be - do not burn gift wrap paper in the fireplace or woodstove. The floating embers will create a fire hazard.
