If it seems kind of obvious, but these tips bear mentioning . . .

All exterior doors should have dead-bolt locks installed. For doors that include a glass window, be sure to install the type of deadbolt that is keyed on both sides. A deadbolt that has just a latch on the inside offers little protection in this situation, since the bad guy could easily break the glass, reach through and unlatch the lock from the inside. (But keep a key nearby in the event of a need for an emergency evacuation.)

Door safety chains are not very effective, install peepholes instead. And never open the door for anyone who comes to the door if you can't see him or her clearly through the peephole.

Need to make a few minor drywall or plaster repairs? Here are a few tips...

Never return leftover drywall compound to the pail. There are bound to be chunks and debris in it that will plague you for the rest of the job.

When working with drywall compound, don't add another coat until the previous coat is completely dry. Moisture from the fresh coat can soften an uncured base coat and ruin your hard work.

When maintaining hardwood floors, do not use a wet mop. It's better to go the hands and knees route with a damp cloth. Despite the temptation, stay away from the 'Oil Soaps', they actually dull the finish of the floor and leave a bit of residue. For the best cleaner; try white vinegar and warm water to provide the greatest shine and least amount of residue. Do not use ammonia, dust cleaners, common household floor cleaners or wax on wood floors.
